Tom Wood has climbed up to 3rd in the Simpson Race Products Ginetta Junior Championship after taking two podium finishes at rounds 8 & 9 at Oulton Park last weekend.

After the misfortunes of Thruxton, Tom had dropped to 5th in the championship and was keen for some good results at Oulton Park, not only to get his title assault back on track, but to also show everyone how much pace he has in the HHC Motorsport car.

As ever qualifying took place on Saturday and Tom’s consistency saw him get a 7th and 6th for Sunday’s races. Part of him may have hoped to be higher, but with overtaking opportunities at Oulton Park he was in a good position to still take some podium finishes.

In race one Tom did just that! An incident at the start allowed Seb Priaulx to clear off but behind and quickest on track, Tom worked his way through the field to eventually get up to 2nd place where he was quickly involved in a battle with Kiern Jewiss. With Priaulx now too far ahead it was a straight fight for 2nd between Wood and Jewiss which went right down to the last corner with Wood eventually coming out on top, taking 2nd and fastest lap!

Race two was a similar story in terms of the start which saw Priaulx once again clear off out front. Behind Wood, was making places, but a fierce battle meant it took him a bit of time to get through to 3rd place. Back in a podium position Wood now chased after Jewiss and had closed him down by the time the pair took the last lap board.

Their second head to head of the weekend this time saw Jewiss take 2nd, but 3rd place was a solid result for Wood and the championship points gained have moved him up to 3rd in the championship.

That’s now five podiums in nine races for Wood, he may not have had that win just yet but it’s points that wins you championships and if he can keep up this kind of form he’ll have plenty of podiums and wins by the end of the season.

Tom is now just seven points behind Dan Harper in 2nd in the championship and 29 points off the top of the table with three races to take place at Croft next time out.

Tom Wood “I’m really happy with the two podiums this weekend! We’ve picked up some good points in the championship and showed our true pace with a fastest lap in race one. I’d like to thank the whole HHC Motorsport team, including Charlie Kemp, Jody Hemmings, Dave (mechanic) and Phil Glew. It was also great to have Christopher Tate from Donington Park down along with Scannervision!”

The fifth weekend of the championship takes place at Croft on the 10th/11th June.
