Tom went into the final round of the series with a new teammate in experienced GT4 British Champion, William Tregurtha. "I'm thrilled to have Will joining me for this round" commented Tom. "He's a good friend and has got a vast amount of experience in a GT4 car, even more so around Hockenheim.
With testing having gone well, Will was to qualify first and start Race 1, with Tom doing the majority of his drive time on Sunday.
Will was confident going into Qualifying 1 having made a couple of changes to the previous day. As the session started, Will started the process of bringing the fresh new Pirelli tyres into their so called 'window'. From this point Will started to set his personal best sectors but it was clear there was something not quite right. At the end of the session his time was just good enough for P14 after struggling with grip. Tom said "it's clear we are missing crucial grip on new tyres. I have all confidence our race pace is strong so I am looking forward to seeing what we can do."
Race 1 started well. Will made up a few positions on the first lap, placing him nicely onto the back of the train for the top 10. As Will's stint went on, he crucially made up another 3 places around the 20 min mark and broke into the top 10, with the fight for P5 overall a close and fierce battle. As a car went off into the gravel and the team weary not to lose out to a safety car, they decided to make the pitstop. The teams great timing meant they could jump the Mercedes in front of them in the pits, sending Tom out into a battle straight out of the pits. Tom made his move very bravely between the middle of two cars moving the Racing One Aston Martin into P7 overall. With a gap to the battle in front for P4, Tom kept pushing and pushing to try and bridge it. Unfortunately, a slight mistake meant that Tom breached track limits meaning a long lap penalty was to be taken. This dropped him down to P9, solidifying where they would finish. "I'm disappointed. It could've been more, and I'm sorry to the team. They've worked super hard this weekend so I look forward to trying to get a result tomorrow."
For Qualifying 2, the team made some slight changes to the car to suit Tom's driving style. As Tom went about his first flying lap, he went purple in all of his sectors to light up the timing screens to go P1 overall. Just pipped by the car following he went for another lap, and went even faster! Again, purple in the first 2 sectors only to be held up by traffic in the 3rd and final sector. Nevertheless, this put the team for on the front row for the 2nd time in 2022. "I'm thrilled", said Tom. It was a real struggle yesterday, but today I feel so much more comfortable driving the car."
The final race of the season saw Tom bravely hold his line round the outside and hold P2 overall. Boxed in around Turn 5, the #31 Porsche drove round the outside off the track gaining a position, dropping Tom to P3. The race was stopped shortly after due to oil on the circuit, but soon restarted when it was cleared up. The equal lap times of the top 3 made it very difficult for anyone to make a strong overtake. The Porsche in 2nd was fast in a straight line and not so good in the mid speed corners, whereas the Aston Martin GT4 excelled through these turns but no so much down the straight. Bravely, with it being the final lap of his stint, he decided to make a brilliant move on P2 at Turn 5. It worked and Tom came into the pits leading the race as the leader had already pitted. A great driver change meant that Will was able to come out of the pits neck a neck with the leaders. Pitting later meant that Tom and Will had been undercut by the Porsche directly behind them, holding them up. As Will got passed back up into the podium positions again, his late race pace wasn't quite strong enough to catch the leaders. For the final 15 mins of the race, a lonely P3 overall was secured as Will then brought the car home at the end of the race to claim another well deserved podium for the #6 Racing One squad.
Tom's comments "I really enjoyed that race. I just thought about the process of winning the race and felt like we had the pace at the start to really fight for it. Our late race pace was matching the two leaders, but unfortunately the undercut just hindered us too much to make it back. I'm over the moon to bring another trophy to the team. This one is for them!"
