2023 sees Tom compete his first full campaign in the Radical SR1 cup with Team Derby Motorsport. The goal simply to win the championship in only the teams' 2nd year of running the car.
Qualifying saw difficult conditions for the field. Both classes of the quicker SR3's and SR1's were competing together in a new format seen by the championship. The circuit was wet at the start of the session meaning that Tom really had to bide his time as he navigated the first 15 mins of the session. Knowing the circuit would slowly dry, Tom made sure his fastest lap was at the end of the session. On the final lap he went purple in all sectors and set Pole position by nearly a full second.
Race 1 saw Tom start at the front of the SR1 grid. After warming his tyres for the first half of the lap, he changed up to 4th gear and suddenly lost drive. Trying everything to keep going, he was then forced to pull off and out of the race before it even began. Since the Radical's are chain driven, an unfortunate failure occurred with this and put the team out of the race.
Since Tom failed to finish Race 1, he was starting at the back of the grid. As the lights went out, Tom stormed away and picked up 4 positions straight away. By the end of the first lap Tom was already up to P3 chasing down the two leaders. By lap 5 Tom had already picked off P2 and was right on the back of the leader. Into the fast old hairpin corner, he made an amazing move for the lead up the inside. Tom then put in the 3 fastest laps of the race in to secure his first win of the season and his first home win at Donington Park of his whole career!
Tom's comments "I'm over the moon. I have been coming to Donington Park since I was 3 years old to watch racing. I have so many great memories here and to make this one of them is a dream come true. A massive thanks to the Team Derby Motorsport squad for a great car. The work isn't done yet so I am keen to keep pushing into the next round at Brands Hatch GP"
