An exciting step into the worlds most competitive championship was announced by Castle Donington’s Tom Wood today. He is moving his attention away from GT4 racing for the time being and has stepped into a factory supported BMW 240i run by Purple Dot Walkenhorst Motorsport. The championship is based solely at the worlds longest circuit, Nürburgring Nordschleife.
The nine rounds of the VLN Endurance Championship will hold 1 race at each event, each race being 4 hours in total, with Tom’s campaign starting on 21st March at VLN 1 and ending on 24th October with VLN 9. With a minimum grid for VLN being around 160 cars overall, it makes for the biggest championship anywhere in racing.
Tom, 18, is one of the youngest drivers at the event. Excited for the 2020 season, Tom gave his thoughts:
Tom Wood: “I’m thrilled to be part of such a great team who have had many successes in the past. The factory support will help me to develop further as a driver, presenting great opportunities throughout the season to fight for podiums and wins in the class. To be racing around the worlds most notorious circuit is something I am not intimidated by, but it goes without saying that the Nürburgring is to be treated with respect.”
“With only a couple of weeks before the first round, it is time to prepare thoroughly in order to perform at the high level that this championship requires.”
You can follow Tom’s progress throughout the year with all races being shown live on the Nürburgring You Tube channel. For more information on the VLN Championship visit their website here.
